PixThis Internship Day 3

2/22/2016

Day 3 of my internship starts my 2nd week at PixThis, this week I am helping out on the production stage. I met Hunter, Carson, Ben, Sue and the head honcho Perry. They are all very nice and fun to work with. I fixed a wooden side panel in studio A that was popping out and also re-painted it to get rid of a bunch of scuff marks. I also set up some 2k ceiling lights and moved a space light with Perry. Perry told me one of  his first gigs out of school (he also went to MHCC) was doing DP work for a show down in Mexico, he said thanks to that job he was able to get his first camera. I thought that was awesome because DP work is what I want to do. He said he has some people he can get me in front of to help me out and get going in the right directions. I told him that I was interested in sound design as well, as the sound design class i'm taking now is really clicking with me, and he told me about Sonic Sounds which is right next door and also his best man did sound design work on Good Will Hunting which is awesome. So to say he has some connections is a definite understatement.  I accidentally ran into Danial Baldwin as he came out of the bathroom that was in the main hall. I guess you could technically call that my first "famous person" encounter. He had a pretty big entourage with him, they were all nice from what i experienced. They were there to look at the edits from a commercial he shot on Sunday for an app called Proper. I got let go from the studio about an hour early so I went to the cage and helped Nathan and the interns over there spiff up some tripods. Im really liking the studio part of this internship, its what I had hoped the environment would be like!

PixThis Internship Day 2

2/19/2016

My second day at the live show warehouse was pretty interesting and a lot of fun. We had to go down to Mentor Graphics in Wilsonville and set up a conference room for them which included a 7ft projection screen and audio equipment. I met Martin today who is the live event equipment manager. He is really nice and also went to MHCC for the Integrated Media program. So we started with Martin, Gary, Ben and I loading up the equipment into the truck to take down to Mentor Graphics. Gary, Ben and I road down in the grip truck, but on the way down the trucks alternator went out, right in front of the exit we were suppose to take. So we had to call Jo and Martin and they got another truck and more helpers to bring down and transfer all the equipment from one truck to the other on the side of the freeway, it was pretty exciting. We got it all transferred in under 10 minutes, which is impressive considering the lowering ramp on our grip truck didn't work because of the alternator being out. Fortunately we had left early anyway and we were only about 5 minutes late for our set up time. Mentor Graphics are a regular customer and were very cool about it all. So for what I actually did for set up was pretty much setting up the projection screen with Gary, Ben and Greg (maybe Craig i've only met him that one time) who from what I gathered is a freelance worker like Gary. We then helped move and set up speakers and taped all the wires going across the ground to make sure it all looked clean and presentable. They called this a small build and it took a little over 2 hours which is good timing for it all, but I can only imagine what a big build will look like, well actually they told me and showed me what it looks like so i don't need to imagine it. Im excited for when I do get to work on a big one. After the the job was done Gary, Ben and I drove up and waited in traffic for awhile and then unloaded everything back into the warehouse and after that they sent me home. It was a fun second day in the live show department and i'm excited to see them all again in a couple weeks!

PixThis Internship Day 1

2/15/2016

Today was my first day as an intern at Picture This Production services. I went and saw Nathan who is the one I was in contact with to get this internship. Nathan is the manager of the equipment department. He informed me that they are starting a new internship model and I am the first intern to be doing it. The new model is that each week I will rotate between the 3 departments of PixThis. The first week I am in the live show department the second week I am in the production stage department and the third week I am in the equipment rental shop, which I will refer to as the "cage". Then rinse and repeat. So my first day in the live show department was pretty mellow. I met Jo, who is the live show events manager, Gary who does freelance work for them and Ben who is on his last month of interning with the live show department, he also was in the integrated media program at MHCC for video production. It was a pretty quick day. Jo asked me what my end goal was in the industry and I told him DP work. Gary and Ben showed me around the warehouse. Gary, Ben and I ran a speaker and some other boxes to the Lloyd Regal Cinema for a conference they were having there. After that they said I could go home because it was a slow day. I went to the cage and asked if I could help out at all, but they already had two other interns there, so I was freed. It was a brief, but good first day. I am excited for all the opportunities this internship will bring me!
